With 'History Will Repeat Itself - Strategies of Re-enactment in Contemporary Art’ the Goethe-Institut Hongkong follows a two-part project. The first part, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Film Archive and Videotage, takes place from June 20 to July 20 in 2008, the second being in exactly one year, in the summer of 2009.

The first part shown in this summer undertakes a slightly-modified version of the exhibition under the same title that was curated by Inke Arns from Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund and Gabriele Horn from KW Kunst-Werke – Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.
The exhibition was originally shown at the Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund,  the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin and Centre of contemporary Art Warszaw Ujazdowski Castle and made possible by the support of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes/ German Federal Cultural Foundation.

In general, the term re-enactment is used to describe a historically correct recreation of socially relevant events. In a re-enactment, the audience, which normally remains passive or at a certain distance from the documented event, either becomes immediate witness of a (repeated historical) event that unfolds in front of its eyes, or even protagonist in an action in which it actively participates. The re-creation of historical events seems to exert a fascination particularly because they provide the opportunity to gain a different entry into history by re-experiencing it. Because history and memory are seldom directly experienced but more often mediated through media, re-enactments also represent an artistic scrutinization of media images. They do not naively ask what really happened beyond the representations of the historical events. Rather, they replace these media based images with a direct and often physical experience and at the same time point out the way in which our collective memory is based on media.

The Institut sees interest in two layers: in the first layer it is the treatment of a historical event transmitted through the media, in the second layer the event is now taken by the artist who created something that makes us curious about. The works on display show traces of the constitution of the artistic subject. In this respect, the show ‘History Will Repeat Itself’ combines history with contemporary art.

A systematic approach to the topic with a list of the exhibited works is provided by a catalogue that could work as a manual to the exhibition.

The exhibition is accompanied by a three-day film programme from June 20 to 23, 2008.

Eröffnet wird die Ausstellung mit einem großen Geburtstags- und Sommerfest am 14.06.2008. Neben dem Festprogramm wird es ein kleines Open-Air-Screening am Abend geben, um bereits auf das Werkleitz Festival im Oktober einzustimmen wird. Darüber hinaus wird eine Jubiläums-DVD vorgestellt, welche die wichtigsten und besten Werkleitz-Kurzfilm-Produktionen der letzten 15 Jahre enthält.

BERLIN MOVIE TOUR on 11th of august 2007 in Cooperation with zeitreisen Berlin

Berlin cinema has never been more attractive. Numerous films have utilizes the city’s breathtaking landscapes for film locations and backdrops. This tour will begin by taking a bus to those well-known film locations. After this tour, you are invited to shoot your own movie with the city as a backdrop. An experienced crew from be-productions will teach you the art of producing a motion picture. At diverse stations, you can act as a performer, director or cameraman. You can also arrange your requisites, instruct your actors or choose your own costumes. Feel free to mimic some famous scenes from Berlin films or create a completely new story yourself. In the evening, the produced films – completely reworked, cutted and underlayed with sound – will be presented to the public.

 

„ICH - DIE INSEL“ 5. August - 12.August 2007

Ein künstlerisches Filmprojekt über Einsamkeit, Aufbruch und Identitätssuche von Jugendlichen auf der dänischen Insel AERØ.
Produkte werden mehrere Clips zwischen 30 –150 Sekunden sein, die unter youtube.com oder mein-eu-blog.de ins Internet gestellt werden.
KünstlerInnen aus Deutschland, Dänemark und Polen arbeiten zusammen mit 27 jugendlichen Assistenten aus den drei Ländern. Be-productions ist verantwortlich für die Regie und Filmproduktion.

Demokratie in der Schule vom 28.01.2007

Der Film „Demokratie in der Schule" wird erstmalig am 29.01.2007 um 16 Uhr im Europäischen Haus, Unter den Linden 78 gezeigt.

Anlass des Image/Dokufilmes ist der Aufsatzwettbewerb „Demokratie in der Schule".
187 Jugendliche aus Europa, Nordamerika und auch China haben spannende Aufsätze
Es gibt drei Unterthemen, die vorrangig in den Aufsätzen der 16-21jährigen vorgeschlagen wurden und zu denen Interviews durchgeführt wurden:
1. Angstfrei in der Schule zu sein
2. ein Gemeinschaftsgefühl zu entwickeln
3. Freude am Lernen zu haben
Als Ergebnis dessen sollen 30 Preisträger am 29.1.2007 im Europäischen Haus, Berlin, ausgezeichnet werden.
Der Film dient als Auftakt der Veranstaltung und wird die Inhalte und die vielen spannenden Ideen für die Zukunft der Schule dokumentieren.

Inner Noise is the first documentary feature wih Invisible Theatre*.
Two men, two borderline situations in the border town of Görlitz (Germany) / Zgorzelec (Poland).

The 20 year-old DanLive in Görlitz, a town with large number of unemployment and lots of neo-Fascists.
So Dan is confronted both with hopelessness in career terms and with xenophobia because his girlfriend is polish.

The old Frank, busker and poet is always on the run and tries to avoid any responsibility for his actions towards women and towards himself.

Both Protagonists realize, what there are smooth transitions between inner and outer borders in Görlitz/Zgorzelec.

Newly created: Invisible Theatre as an interactive part of the film. This is unique concerning the artistic realisation.
